Paper Purge

Thu Oct 29, 2009, 2:59 PM
I've been undertaking the seemingly impossible task of organizing all the schoolwork that I've collected over the years. And OH MY GAWD how I regret setting foot into that back closet and setting my eyes upon those boxes of paper.

I have an uncanny love of paper and it verges on madness. I swear I've kept every single scrap of paper since I was 12. The purging process is nerve-wrecking. Two things keep me from throwing things out: possible usefulness and sentimental value. I keep thinking things like, "What if I need to re-learn how to do long-division? This worksheet will be useful then!" and "When I'm old and wrinkly I will be pleasantly reminded of the days when I used to go to the school library when I come across this note informing me that I have an overdue book!" and other such nonsense.

During this process I've come across countless pages of notes covered with doodles. And I've been thinking how it's even possible that this kind of stuff comes out of one's brain...

Seriously?

Seriously, I miss collaborative doodles. :(

Heh, trip down memory lane. I have manila folders and accordion binders full of papers that I'd easily classify as "I should throw this out but I laugh/marvel at how productive I was/etc. whenever I pull it out once every few years."

I think HS just happened to have an ideal set of circumstances for people to doodle. We'd get to school so damn early, and once everyone was done commiserating about homework or studying... what else were you going to do with paper and writing utensils? In college and beyond, one has to actively go out and set up art jams or whatever.

Though... it was kind of funny that we spent all our time drawing at home through oekaki back then as well...

It's so sad. Actually, I'm so sad in a pitiable kind of way. There's no way that I'm going to be satisfied by a 10 minute doodle anymore. That's sad.
